Apart from the handle design, there is really only one change: the 1.2 mm thick outer veneers (so the outer veneers are a bit thicker than usual) are made of spruce and not of ayous.
This is for the following reasons:
Spruce produces more spin/disruptive effect than Ayous.
The wood is much more robust with spruce than with Ayous.
Spruce is still quite soft, but not as sensitive to scratches and dents as Ayous.
Of course, there are also two disadvantages: Spruce is significantly more expensive than Ayous and also heavier. Nevertheless, the weight of the Defense Pro is still very low at around 80 grams.
Although this defensive blade has a slightly larger face (162 x 155 mm), it is still very slow - slightly faster than the old version of the Defense, but still slower than e.g. the Lion Shield. So the speed is comparable to that of the Lion Earth DEF.
In direct comparison with the Earth DEF, the Defense Pro is a bit more elastic due to the larger striking surface and is also more top-heavy. Also, the Earth DEF is a blade with a synthetic fiber core and the Defense Pro is a blade without. In any case, the price and the higher stability speak for the Defense Pro.
With only 3 veneers made of soft ayous (core veneer) and spruce (outer veneers), this blade can offer very strong damping in passive play. The total thickness of the wood is approx. 4.2 mm. To ensure that the wood is not too elastic and does not break too easily, a special gluing technique was chosen that makes the wood harder and more stable at the same time. Thanks to the spruce outer veneers, the Defense Pro is sufficiently stable and even more break-resistant than the Lion Earth DEF.
We recommend this blade to the classic defensive player who, for example, plays a mixture of underspin defense and short block balls with long pimples. Own attacks are possible, albeit with slight drawbacks compared to faster blades. In combination with long pimples, the Lion Defense offers a very good spin reversal.
The grips are normal (only changed in design compared to the Lion Defense, not in grip strength).
