The Lion Aratron Defensive is a new defensive wood from Lion with "Aratox" as its core veneer. These are single strands of soft synthetic fiber inserted between the surrounding veneers from Awan. The result is a very light (weight only about 78 g), but still stable defensive wood with a slightly larger clubface (about 162 x 155 mm). For a maximum rotation in combination with the right coverings, the slightly harder outer veneers from Koto ensure that the ball stop is medium hard. Between the veneers from Awan and the outer veneers are still installed two intermediate veneers from Limba. Thus, this wood is a construction with 7 (6 + 1) veneers (woods with only one synthetic fiber insert are otherwise a rarity). The total thickness of all veneers is only about 4.9 mm. The handles have a length of about 10.1 cm and fall normal size, the handles are made of solid hinoki. This wood is quite elastic and dampens in the passive game from strong. Temporary reserves on the offensive are decent (slightly better than the Lion Shield and much better than the Lion Defense). Compared to the Sword 309, this wood is more elastic and slower in passive play. In the offensive, it is slightly weaker due to the slightly larger clubface. But it is much better processed and much easier. Compared to the SpinLord Defender II, the Aratron Defensive is slightly stronger in the stumbling game at the table with "material" and somewhat weaker in offense.
We recommend this wood for combination with long nubs or anti on the backhand side. It is suitable for the near-table interference game as well as for the undercut defense from a distance. Overall, the Aratron Defensive is our slowest wood with a synthetic fiber inlay and for savvy "material players" one of our best woods.
